May Day Exhibition in NYC

Deitch Projects is pleased to present May Day, an exhibition of new work by Shepard Fairey, as its final project. Titled not only in reference to the day of the exhibition’s opening, the multiple meanings of May Day resonate throughout the artist's new body of work. Originally a celebration of spring and the rebirth it represents, May Day is also observed in many countries as International Worker's Day or Labor Day, a day of political demonstrations and celebrations coordinated by unions and socialist groups. “Mayday” is also the distress signal used by pilots, police and firefighters in times of emergency.

With energy and urgency befitting the title May Day, Fairey captures the radical spirit of each of his subjects, using portraiture to celebrate some of the artists, musicians and political activists he most admires. Says Fairey, "These people I'm portraying were all revolutionary, in one sense or another. They started out on the margins of culture and ended up changing the mainstream. When we celebrate big steps that were made in the past, it reminds us that big steps can be made in the future."

Many of the steps Fairey refers to involve the advocacy of the working class, put forth in the songs of Joe Strummer and Woody Guthrie and the writings of Cornel West, and among the works of other heroes portrayed in May Day. International Worker's Day celebrated in nearly 100 countries throughout the world, commemorates the 1886 Haymarket Massacre in Chicago when a peaceful rally supporting workers on strike was disrupted by a bomb, and then a barrage of police gunfire. Because of negative sentiment surrounding the incident, U.S. President Grover Cleveland decided it was best to avoid celebrating the day, but it is precisely such sentiment that Fairey believes must be voiced: "It's a day to express frustration with the powers that be, but also a day for activists to pursue ideals." In May Day, he does both, with images supporting free speech and bemoaning the U.S. two party political system, pushing for renewable energy and critiquing corporate propaganda.

In Fairey's mind, the persistence of difficulties across all of these arenas—political, environmental, economic, cultural—points to that third meaning of May Day: a distress signal. "By now we thought we would be in post-Bush utopia, but we're still having to call attention to these problems,” he remarks. Like any mayday call, however, the sounding of the alarm also brings hope for help on the way. "If we stay silent, there's no hope,” Fairey muses. "But if we make noise, if we put our ideas out there, then maybe we can make a change like the people in the portraits have done."

Shepard Fairey is the man behind OBEY GIANT, the graphics that have changed the way people see art and the urban landscape. Fairey’s art reached a new level of recognition in 2008, when his “HOPE” portrait of Barack Obama became the iconic image of the presidential campaign and helped inspire an unprecedented political movement. As Shepard Fairey’s body of work reached its 20-year mark in 2009, the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston honored him with a full-scale solo retrospective, which drew a record number of visitors for the museum. Entitled Supply and Demand, the exhibition shares its name with Fairey’s career-chronicling book, now in its second edition (Gingko Press). The exhibition traveled to the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh and will move to the Center for Contemporary Art in Cincinnati, on view through August 22nd, 2010.

Ryan McGinness Works., an exhibition of new paintings and sculptures by Ryan McGinness, opens on Saturday, March 7th, at Deitch Projects’ 18 Wooster Street gallery. Like all of McGinness’s exhibitions at Deitch Projects, this show is not just a display of new works, but an experiential installation. Gallery visitors will enter the world of Ryan McGinness.

McGinness merges several of the most important directions in contemporary painting. His work combines all-over composition, inspired by Jackson Pollock and the mechanical silkscreen process inspired by Andy Warhol. The work also fuses naturalistic and contemporary pop culture references. His imagery derives form a broad range of sources: from dreams and hallucinations to song lyrics and fragments of art history. There is a push and pull between content and form, and between literal meaning and intuitive feeling. McGinness’s paintings represent his own mental landscape. His compositions reflect the infinite, ever-flowing continuum of the universe.

The opening of Ryan McGinness Works. coincides with the release of a new book of the same title, published by Rizzoli. The hardcover 296-page book is a process-revealing catalogue of recent works which includes a behind-the-scenes look at McGinness’s last Deitch exhibition in 2005. Included are texts and interviews by David Byrne, Tom Greenwood, Peter Halley, Greg Lindquist, and Jonathan T. D. Neil.

The Spring 2010 Graduating BFA Exhibition features work by 42 graduating Bachelor of Fine Arts students from the Ernest G. Welch School of Art and Design at Georgia State University. Each year this celebratory exhibition represents for many of our graduates their first public exposure.

I can only keep this up for a few days. Please don't share this information with others.

I wanted to share this with you from one designer to another. I am currently serving as an invited judge for the 2010 BDA/Promax competition which I think is always a great honor. It reinforces my belief that the BDA/Promax organization continues to be in the forefront of all the other design organizations as it focuses itself on celebrating not only the on-air product we get to see but the achievements of grahic designers, producers, editors, writers and the like. This is the North American promotional and marketing area of the judging competition. This is one of the 200+ entries that demonstrates how MTV allows it's creative employees to submit and enter their work on a site they set up for them. It showcases how they work and think.
This is only up for a few days so take a look. I gave it a big thumbs up for embracing their company designers, editors, writers,etc.
Many of the entries are video based design promos but there is also a large number of website designs as well that are key to the success of many of the network shows. A few are below:

The Trustworthiness of Beards: For John, Troy, Nev and Justin

Beards as Indicators of Trustworthiness
One way of proving your trustworthiness is by earning it the old-fashioned way. The other way, apparently, is by simply growing a beard.

The Chronicle of Higher Education reports on a study in the Journal of Marketing Communications, which found that among bearded and clean-shaven men, the bearded men were generally deemed more credible.

The study showed participants pictures of men endorsing certain products. In some photos, the men were clean-shaven. In others, the same men had beards. Participants thought the men with beards had greater expertise and were significantly more trustworthy when they were endorsing products like cell phones and toothpaste.

As the Chronicle rightly made mention: The study looked only at neatly trimmed beards of medium-length.

Might this have implications for say, the recent graduate, new to the job market, or the academic, still hopeful for a tenure track position?

Furthermore, if men can grow facial hair and are considered more credible because of it, what's the female equivalent? Or dare I even ask?

As previously discussed, Tuesday, April 6th will be our in-class and in-formal presentations for concepts and prototype packaging for both the Lizzy Loeb and the Chuck Loeb CD project.

Please come prepared to show mockups for both CD packages along with your concepts for appearance and overall eco-friendly packaging.

Some cool retro ideas I discovered which do have a "lizzy loeb" feel to them.
Jumping off idea from the image of the flute player: perhaps having a "lizzy-like" character leading the "music or musical instruments" out...following her...or even the
"songbird" idea as she is indeed just that...again, other designers work should inspire new ideas in yourself.

Looking for credits for both of these images.Will post once I have them.

I was happy to be a part of the experience since he was always a favorite of mine.Originally the play was called "Falsettoland" and then "Dance of the Falsettos" and finally on Broadway it was "Falsettos."

Q1:Tell me About Yourself:
"Tell me about yourself, and by that I mean tell me about your background, your experience and highlight anything you'd like to share and we'll go from there."

This is the most common interview question, and it's the one where so many people get tongue-tied. This isn't your life story, nor should it be too personal. Your answer should reflect your professional side and it should directly tie into the position you're seeking. Sell yourself for his particular job by highlighting that you have the skills the role requires.

Q2: What's your greatest weakness?
"I haven't had a lot of experience with public speaking before large groups, so I don't feel my best when giving big presentations. It's a skill that I'd like to build on so I've enrolled in a course or I'm hoping I'll have a chance to build this skill here."
Another example: "I've had trouble in the past with managing e-mail -- instead of allowing it to manage me and monopolize my time. It's so easy to get distracted by the pressure to respond instantly when e-mails pop into your inbox, but I'm learning that the best time management rules dictate that it's best to check and respond to e-mail at designated times instead of every minute of the day. That's helped me to be far more productive than ever before, and it's a work in progress that I'm constantly aware of."

Q3:What do you know about us?
This question gets at whether you really want to work here -- or if you're looking for any job with any employer. Do you know the bare bones or can you demonstrate a depth of knowledge? Too often candidates don't do the research, or they assume the interviewer shares whatever they need to know about the organization. Wrong.

The best answer will allow you to show off your research -- it'll be clear that you've done your homework because you know the company, its history, the trends impacting the industry in which it operates, and its top competitors. This shows you're very interested in this employer, not just any company.

Q4: What is your five-year plan?
Wrong answers: In your job, on the beach, anywhere but here -- even if that's how you really feel. Or you feel like saying none of us can predict tomorrow; how can we possibly know what's five years ahead of us. Not good either.
Good answers: he answer should reflect growth with that company. "I'd like to become the best sales person in the company and help train other sales leaders. I'd like to be the best science teacher in this school system to enable our classrooms to be used as a model of excellence."

If it's a small company, you may try: "I'd very much like to help build this company's bottom line so I'm able to take advantage of the great opportunities that a growing company has to offer."

Q5: How do you handle high-pressure moments?
This is about problem-solving so be aware. Should demonstrate maturity.
Your answer may reflect a tight deadline you had to meet -- one that was perhaps sprung on you with little notice. Or maybe you've witnessed layoffs and you've had to absorb twice as much work with half the staff.

Maybe your answer will reflect a personal challenge. Did you have to make a big decision about the medical care of a family member? How did you go about weighing the options before making a decision? Have you faced a financial challenge?

No matter what your response, interviewers are looking for how you handle change, how adaptable you are, your thought process, and your decision making skills, especially since you'll be faced with the need to make regular decisions on the job.

MoMA Acquires '@' Symbol, Ampersand Values Plummet

If you take a look across the top of your keyboard, you will notice an invaluable work of design that has been recently acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator for the Department of Architecture and Design, decided that '@' was due for some institutional gravitas, and pitched it to MoMA's design and architecture acquisitions committee. Why this quotidian symbol, and why now, you ask? What makes '@' a piece of design worthy of museum attention?

The '@' symbol has a relatively long history in writing, at least as far back as the 15th century. Historians, linguists, and philologists have debated over the origin of the symbol, but its birthplace remains murky. Medieval monks used it to mean 'ad' (Latin for 'to' or 'toward') in their manuscripts, while Renaissance traders used it to mean 'amphora,' both a ceramic vessel and a unit of measure, on their ledgers. But, for most of its history, '@' remained in relative obscurity, despite appearing on typewriter keys as far back as 1885. Think about the caret, or the '^' symbol. Assuming that you're not a mathematician, how often do you employ that symbol for uses other than Japanese emoticon cats? Well, '@' was sort of like that.

In 1967, however, an American electrical engineer named Ray Tomlinson flipped the '@' world upside down while he was working with tech company BBN on a contract from Advanced Research Projects agency, then developing the proto-Internet network known as ARPAnet. Tomlinson worked on a system of sending and receiving messages between computers on that network, now commonly known as e-mail. He decided to co-opt the infrequently utilized symbol to designate a specific user 'at' a specific host computer. We don't need to say much more for you to realize how far-reaching this little decision was.

For the design department at MoMA, this unintended historical shift in use and meaning of a symbol was enough to warrant museum recognition. But the decision to 'acquire' the '@' symbol is a curious one for many reasons. The museum recently purchased conceptual artist Tino Sehgal's performance 'The Kiss' for a reported $70,000. (The artist, whose solo show at the Guggenheim recently ended, notoriously eschews written contracts, recordings and other documentation in the sale of his works.) Acquiring an ephemeral and incorporeal work like Sehgal's is pretty new for the museum, but Antonelli obviously wanted to accelerate the move toward conceptual
acquisitions with '@.'

But the 'acquisition' itself is symbolic, as '@' exists in the public domain and is owned by no one. Of course, this acquisition gives MoMA no proprietary rights over the symbol, and, according to Antonelli, may be the only free object in the museum's collection. As such, MoMA will not display one specific kind of '@' symbol, but will rather celebrate it through a variety of typefaces. While some may question the purchase of conceptual pieces like Sehgal's by an institution like MoMA, we think that everyone can get behind this kind of 'acquisition.' The Society of Typographic Aficionados (SOTA) is pleased to announce a new award for young people who have created original work in type design, type history, or other areas related to typography. The award recognizes a person 30 years of age or younger who shows both achievement and future promise in the field of typography. The recipient will attend TypeCon2010 in Los Angeles and will give a presentation during the conference program.

The SOTA board of directors hopes that this introduction to a large cross-section of the typographic community will serve as a catalyst in advancing the career of the recipient.

The award includes main conference and education forum registration fees plus reimbursement of up to $1500 USD for coach travel to/from Los Angeles and standard lodging in the conference hotel while attending TypeCon. Attending TypeCon2010 and giving a presentation are required to receive the award.

After teaching in Nigeria with the U.S. Peace Corps, Steve Frykholm attended and graduated from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Furniture icon Herman Miller, Inc. then hired him to be its first internal graphic designer.

For 40 years he has been largely responsible for Herman Miller's image and graphic identity. He's learned a thing or two during that time, as a designer, creative director, and advisor while working on Herman Miller's award winning annual reports, product brochures, posters, catalogs, publications, ads, websites, and videos.

Not only has Steve received Herman Miller's highest recognition for an employee, The Carl F. Frost Award, but he has also received recognition from professional peers. His work has been published and exhibited, and he's received Gold and Silver medals and Certificates of Excellence from AIGA, NY Art Directors Club, American Center for Design, Mead Annual Report Show, Communication Arts, Graphis, Creativity, and Print. He is an AIGA Fellow, a Lifetime Achievement Silver Medalist from the Ad Club of West Michigan, and recognized as an annual report legend in Graphis and an American Design icon in the 50th Anniversary Issue of Communication Arts.

Steve and his wife, Nancy Phillips, an interior architectural designer and equestrian, live in rural Michigan where she rides dressage and he spreads manure and photographs wildflowers.

REMEMBER when a poster with a little French street waif or a pair of cat’s eyes was enough to sell a Broadway show? Now, with advertising trying to stand out on television, the Internet and mobile devices, choosing the right Broadway campaign often means finding a look that is flexible enough for different platforms, and one that also catches attention quickly.
For the coming revival of “La Cage aux Folles,” Sonia Friedman, one of the producers, hung poster candidates on her office walls for a week, then asked herself, “Do I want to live with this for the rest of my life?”

Ms. Friedman and Drew Hodges, chief executive of the advertising agency SpotCo, discussed SpotCo-designed posters that were rejected for “La Cage,” which begins previews on April 6 at the Longacre Theater. An interactive feature on these and other options, including the final version, is here.

THE CONCEPTION “Something very simple with a lot of wit felt good,” Mr. Hodges recalled. “We just got some fake eyelashes and a fake mustache and laid them down on a scanner. It seemed sweet and had a wink, literally. It says, 'This is a show that has a lot of charm and cleverness.' ”

THE VERDICT “It's quite clever, but it doesn't draw you in,” Ms. Friedman said. “If you do a comedy logo, it's not taking on the other aspects of the play. If you do a sexy one, it's alienating the audience from the other aspects.”

ABOVE, CENTER

THE CONCEPTION “This image was based on posters from the south of France from the 1940s through the 1970s,” Mr. Hodges said. “Here we kept adding more stubble to the legs and bumping up the calf muscles. We embraced that these guys were guys, and that there was humor in that. But if you don't notice the stubble, you don't get the gender crossover. Then it's just a woman with shoes. That's no fun.”

THE VERDICT Also a no-go. “We all agreed that the Cagelles were at the heart of this production,” Ms. Friedman said, referring to the show's chorus line of female impersonators. “They are so dominant that we wanted to feature them in the art but in a way that reflects our production, as opposed to how people would imagine transvestites looking. As the curtain goes up, the Cagelles are in silhouette behind a colored gauze. It's pretty much what we ended up with in the final art.”

ABOVE, RIGHT

THE CONCEPTION “This one was very intentionally made to reflect disco graphics, Fiorucci, nightclubs like Xenon and Studio 54, and the lushness of that period,” Mr. Hodges said. “In some ways it's very successful in doing that, but less successful at all the other things that are in the show. It's a little too cold. It's also a little too sexual.”

THE VERDICT “I don't think it's our show,” Ms. Friedman said. “It feels quite aggressive, and 'La Cage' isn't aggressive. We wouldn't do art that we think will appeal to the tourist who is probably going to come to New York to see 'Phantom.' We would exclude the audience that will come, the target audience, New Yorkers and the serious musicalgoer.”

This is my unofficial Quick List of informative information (I didn't say brief) of how to interview for a job or internship and still keep your soul.

Ten glorious lessons that I learned from interviewing and being interviewed.

1.Arrive Early to your Interview.
Actually if you've never been to the place your are about to interview then do a site check or a drive-by a day or so before your interview. Know where to park and where the front door is. It will also lessen your anxiety if you see where you're going before it happens. Get good sleep the night before you interview.

Visualize yourself going through the interview. It is commonly used by many professionals and it works. I'm not kidding.

2.Arrive Early: Part Two.
Don't take for granted that life is suddenly going to roll out a red carpet for you the day you go for your all-important interview. Traffic, car problems, road closings, weather,and the occasional spilled coffee on your "interview clothes" can always throw a wrench into any one's day. Leave early enough for your interview even if you have to sit in the parking lot a little longer than expected. Talk radio is always entertaining while you are waiting.

3.Take a Bath.
The old saying "fresh as a daisy" really comes into play here.
Good Hygiene insures the interviewer remembers your work, not your scent.
Leave them wanting more, not less.
Remember that an over abundance of cologne/perfume can work against you as well.
Think fresh soapy smell.

Oh,and try to keep your sweating down to a minimum. Sweating is a normal thing prior and during an interview but I suggest doubling-up with your deodorant or perspiration pads that day. I've actually seen people in parking lots changing into their interview clothes right before they walk into the interview with an employer. (Be aware of windows to the place you are interviewing while you are changing clothes... Hey, whatever works.

Whatever it takes....cool, calm and collected (and dry and smelling good.)
I cannot tell you how many conversation I had at CNN and NBC with my colleagues after someone came in smelling and looking like last nights bar and grill. It just doesn't fly no matter how good a designer you might think you are. Even the Cartoon Network is looking for someone dependable,fun, wacky, gregarious, yes, but also well groomed.
Find a mirror right before you stroll into your interview and take one last look at yourself before your first meeting.

Nose?
(yes, those pesky booger-like things and runaway nose hairs are definitely a turnoff in an interview, unless you're Salvador Dali. I've had to sit and stare at many designers whom I was interviewing only to become obsessed with something at the end of their nose while they were speaking. I swear I don't think I ever heard a word they saying during the entire interview because I found myself mesmerized with some weird little thing on their nose or eyelid. It's hypnotizing. Let the work be hypnotizing not that thing at the bottom of your nose or that onion seed in your teeth. I know it's shallow, but it's true.

Eyes?
Bloodshot? Grab your Murine. Check.

Mouth?
(what's with those weird little white snowball things in the corners when your mouth becomes dry as sandpaper? Be prepared. Think Chapstick!
Did you have a spinach salad for lunch before your interview? Brush your teeth. Check.

Hair? Watch those hair products, the can certainly backfire on you if its the least bit of rainy or humid day. I've never known a person who didn't get a job because of bad hair, but you just might be the first. Check.

Kidneys?
Go to the restroom before you interview.
It's hard to interview on a full kidney. Not a good idea to meet someone for an interview and then ask to use their restroom. It's a bid odd to do so.
It's also a good time for me to mention that you might want to check your buttons, buckles, Velcro and zippers after an impromptu visit to the restroom. I have too many stories about this visual oversight. Somehow interviews become very strange (for all involved) if someone has forgot to close the barn door or button up.

Dress accordingly for the interview. If you've done your homework you know the dress code already but for the interview a coat and tie might be just as inappropriate as a VanHalen reunion T-shirt. Youth inspired but also respectful of the interview process.
Know your place. You might even want to ask during a phone interview should you wear a coat and tie or something more casual.

4.Listen First. Then Speak.
My old Art Director Fran Heaney at CNN used to say "when you're new, be new." Simply put, don't go into an interview and start telling them how you'd like to run the company or how you feel that their product could be better (your are basically saying it sucks) or that you'd really like to work at their company because you just really want to get your foot into the door so you can eventually move around inside the company. Beware of coming on too strong no matter how many cups of coffee you've drank beforehand. Be respectful. Listen.
Learn to talk about your work quickly and simply. (I don't mean speed-talking.)
On a good day, most employers and interviewers only have 10-15 minutes to spare for interviews.

Try not to explain your work and point at it and touch and hang all over it. Don't make the person who is interviewing you feel like you are teaching them about what Design is...you don't have to point at a poster you created and say "this is a poster about..." They probably already know that. Talk about your process or your concept.
Remember you are visual communicators, so your work will probably speak for itself without further explanation. The employer will ask if they want to know more. That's your cue to speak up.
There is no harm in describing the individual work if asked to do so, but allow the interviewer to ask follow up questions...and then have a few good questions up your sleeve to ask them. They usually want to hire someone who is interested in their own welfare...meaning a healthy work environment.

Be Real.
Most companies already know that you will either stay with them long term or not. It's a joint union between the company and the employee...and both benefit. Be humble. We all can always choose to learn something new from an interview. Sit back and let the interviewer tell their story....and pay attention. Don't interrupt them and become "all crazy-eyed" while they are telling you about their company. Don't yawn in their face. It's so simple. All you have to do is just listen and when the time is right, speak up. Tell the employer what you know they would love to hear. Nothing wrong with that. They are expecting you to do that. Be honest and upfront but remember you haven't gotten the job/internship yet...Things you could possibly say:
"Why yes, I've always imagined myself working here and am so excited that I now finally have a chance to interview," or "I've always dreamed of working here. It's why I wanted to get into design in the first place."

(OK,okay. I can imagine each of you rolling your eyes at this point so you perhaps you don't have to overload it with sentiments like from a Hallmark card, but you get the point. Show some enthusiasm and excitement. You are center stage and the spotlight is only on you. Enjoy this moment where it becomes about you and your work.)

Don't be too chatty or giggly.
Don't be too silent.
Don't mumble.
Don't volunteer too much information about yourself during the interview.
Look them in the eye.
Don't ever look at your watch.
Don't end the interview process yourself.
Don't ask for change for the parking meter outside.
Don't tell them you have another interview right after this one.
Don't cuss or make "off color remarks."
Speak in complete sentences.
Don't faint or fart in the office.
Don't shrug when asked questions by the interviewer.
Don't roll your eyes. Ever.
Don't ask about money or vacation time. (There's time for that later.)
Don't ask what the policy is about dating within the company.
If you know someone else who is working at the company you are interviewing with, it's probably not very smart not to bring that person(s) up in your interview. You never know how they stand in the eyes of the company or the person you are interviewing with. Let the interviewer bring it up and then only answer with "yes, I know them. We went to school together."
Don't say disparaging things about your school, your faculty, your classmates,your past jobs and most importantly, don't say negative things about yourself.
Don't come off as insecure or needy but just as important don't come off cocky.
Don't be a Prima Donna.

Please ask interesting questions during your interview...not the kind of questions which appear too self-serving like...(and these are actual questions I've been asked)...
"So, How's the money here?
How many days for vacation will I get?
When should I expect a promotion?
Do you have a higher salary I can start at?
What is actually considered "late to work?"
Where's the break room?
How long do we get for Lunch?
Can I listen to my iPod at work?
What's my incentive for working here?
Will I ever have to work late?
I have a second job and can only work during these hours...
Do you guys ever go out drinking after work?
Is there a gym here and how much is it to join?
I heard you got free Braves tickets when you work here.
What is the guy to girl ratio here?
Any gay people work here?
Can I bring my baby with me to work?
Is there an incentive program for those who want climb the corporate ladder?
Can I get an pay advance?
Do you have a lactating room?
If I get this job I have to tell you that I need the first week in August off for a wedding I'm in.
If I were hired today when would be my first paycheck?"

These are real questions I've been asked. There's more but you get the point.

Concentrate on asking good questions.
Good questions might come in the form of telling the employer that you're really interested in working in a healthy work environment. You can also ask about things like if they have a good 401K or if they plan to grow the company. Again,you are thinking more long-term and that's what you want the employer to pick up from you. Leave the employer with the thought that regardless of whether or not your are hired full-time, part-time or as intern that you're there (committed) for the long haul.
Anything can happen, no need to point that out. Say what they want to hear. Big points here if you play your cards (and words) right.

Remember they are going to train you in some capacity to work there, so they would like to at least think that their time isn't wasted on someone who will leave after a few weeks.

Remember that interviewing is a lot like fishing.
You have to have the correct bait (good design) for what you want to capture (a job), then you have to be patient (you can't make someone hire you) and you have to be willing to choose which pond (company) to throw your hook out into.

Practice what you might ask or say in the interview to the employer.
Be comfortable with your words and how they sound once you've said them. Videotape yourself to see what you look and sound like. I know it's frightening to do so, but it will so keep you focused and is insightful.

Write down a quick list of 5 strengths...you might as well write down a few weaknesses even if you can't think of any...come at it from the the positive like "I'm kind of a workaholic because I love design so much."

5.Do your Homework:
You would never think of buying a home, a car or even get married if you hadn't done some type of investigating/legwork in finding out a little history or background behind where you are applying for a job/internship. No two internships or jobs are ever the same. For that matter, no two interviews are ever the same. One interviewer might ask you 20 esoteric questions just to sit back and enjoy watching you squirm while another might interview you on their lunch break..while you sit there and watch them eat spaghetti and meatballs. Hey, at least they cared enough to include you during their lunch for an interview. Go with the flow. Don't get rattled. What they are doing just might be a trick to see how you would react. I kid you not.
Go with it.
Act. Don't React.

Research the employer so you can ask sensible & intelligent questions.
Imagine yourself working there with all the other designers who you've just met on your way into the interview. Try to imagine what it might be like after working there for 3 months or even a year. Visualize yourself doing the work you see others doing visualize yourself at a Mac station or just chatting up some of the other artist about doing creative work. What is the overall ambiance like inside the studio?
Are there windows? Do you hear people talking or laughing? What do the other employers look like? Frightened? Calm? Friendly? Take a clue here when you look around.
All this might scare the heck out of you but it also might calm you down. Own it and don't forget to listen to your soul. It will guide you.

6.Be Yourself:
If you are listening to what is happening around you, if you are in touch with life and living, which I like to call your soul, then you will certainly be led to the right places at exactly the right time you need to be there. Can't make something happen. It just has to happen. Synchronicity.
Trust your instinct. Get rid of the clutter in your life whatever forms it might take.
This might include all the Ney Sayers and crazymakers as well. Distance yourself from those individuals who only want to bring you down to their level. Adios Amigos!

I truly believe that all of us already have all of the answers to all of the questions long before they are ever asked. Just imagine that concept for a minute.
Think of all the times you've run around asking others what you should do...or "if you were me, would you do this or that? or How would you handle this? or, Do you think I should do this?" I'm certain you already know the answer before you even ask for someone else's' opinion.

Some things really are about having faith and letting life happen in it's own time. All the planning in the world can't keep your from your destiny. You might not believe that, but it's held true for me so far.
You have to want it.
You can't pretend to want it and you have to want it for all the right reasons
(those will change according to who each of you are.)
I've said this many times in class, if you don't love what you're doing, it won't love you back. Love it or get into another line of work. It's a relationship. It's a courtship. Sometimes you argue with your work, you have to walk away from your work and you just might want to divorce your work...but if you love it, you will always survive your work and your workplace.

Just don't let yourself get in the way of you and your success.
By that I mean stop over-think every thing...before it happens and after it happens and while it's happening. Go with the flow.

"DP" means "don't project." Be prepared and then let life happen.
Live in the moment and plan for the future. period.
Many times an employer will ask you things just to get your reaction. There is a whole school of thought about creative interviewing and much of that might work for business professionals and attorneys and such, but creative people are quiet a different tribe.
Our profession is still relatively small in terms of numbers and thrive on being unique and different. (Meant in all the positive ways.)
Let go and let your creative spirit step up to the plate and give it a shot.

None of you got to where you are now by mistake. I promise.
Whether you know it or not you have a great big invisible parachute and you'll be safe. Your parachute is your creativity. Think of all the love and effort and time you put into all the projects that you've done thus far in school.
You are a work-in-progress. Your work, your amazing sense of self discovery and work is a chronicle of your history as a designer...of where you've been and how you got to where you are going. It's your labor of love. It will never turn it's back on you unless you do so first.
So Relax and enjoy this time of change and growth.

Each time your interview you will become more confident and actually start to believe your own story as you tell it over and over in the interviews.
Imagine that! This is why I have always felt that class critiques are so important.
Unfortunately so many of you fail to realize this until it's over or you don't take it seriously. Critiques are a place where you can learn to speak about your work,your thinking process and your end results. You are among friends and colleagues who are there to support you. You are safe within this environment. Your class is literally your "safe house" and you should be able to expose your strengths and weaknesses without fear of repercussion.
The critiques are not intended to be personal even though your creativity might be very personal to you. Learn to separate the two.

Everyone has good interviews and bad interviews. It's a fact so get used to it and don't loose your sense of humor. Not everyone is going to love and adore your work.
Toughen up.

7.Be Spontaneous:
Some of the best interviews I have ever witnessed where the ones where the person seemed so comfortable in their own skin they actually put me at ease during the interview. This is true of the interviewer and interviewee. Not an easy thing to do for most of us, but it has to do with just knowing who you are, warts and all, and not apologizing for it. Of course you can't afford to become too overly confident either.

Don't ever speak down about yourself in an interview.
Don't diminish your creativity. It's listening to you.
Be optimistically honest.
Be prepared that not everyone, everywhere is going to love or even like all your work...and that's just fine. You get points for trying.
Gather up your little creative jewels, put them back into your portfolio case,
thank the interviewer for their time and leave with your head held high.
"Nothing lost, nothing gained."
Some connections just don't ever make.
Oil and Water.
Britney and K-Fed.

Don't sweat it because the next interview and job is just around the corner.

8.MIA: Missing In Action:
I would never,ever, never leave my original portfolio work with any employer.
Sometimes employers will ask you to "run it by and leave if for them to look at at their convenience." If you do, the you are taking an incredible risk that you might not ever see your portfolio again (Missing in Action) or at best, you might get your portfolio back damaged or soiled or even pieces missing. I've heard of employers asking artist to leave their work and when the artist went back to retrieve it several pieces were missing. Stolen. I've heard this happening too many times to many designers. Tell the employer that since the all the work inside your portfolio is original work that you'd be glad to wait outside until they've had a chance to view it. It shows you care and have pride in your work. They wouldn't leave their work with you. So it's fair game. You won't be penalized for it.
You aren't making hamburgers. These design artifacts are indeed your children.
Speaking of children...you would never think of leaving your "child" in a hot or cold car for a long period of time, right? So don't do this with your portfolio. Keep it in a good climate controlled place for safe keeping until you use it again.

9.Get the Job First:
Try to see all this interviewing as a great big high-stakes gamble where you don't really loose. It's a game of sorts, but a game of consequences with an outcome of either good or bad. It's the interviewing experience that really counts. Put on your best self, go in for the interview, be prepared, be rested, speak your own creative voice and leave the rest up to the universe. That's all you can do.
Your energy and enthusiasm and spirit will come through if you let it.

But be prepared to make a decision if the all important question is asked of you:
"We would really like for you to come work with us. When can you start?"

So many people are so busy focusing on the interview process itself that they tend to forget what happens if they actually land the job or internship. Know what you are going to say or at least to have thought about what you might say while you were in the car listening to talk radio because you got to the interview too early (as recommended.)

NOTE TO SELF: Remember you now suddenly have options when someone asks you to come to work with them so don't forget that.
All at once the entire interview process-table has been turned and now YOU are in charge. Although this brief moment is quick, short-lived and mostly uncharted, you now have to be wiser beyond your wildest imagination and lived years.

(BTW Don't forget to enjoy this moment of being wanted and having your creative ego stroked. Wallow in your reverie for at least a nanosecond.)

Still, you must formalize an answer into a complete sentence that will satisfy the job offer just asked by the employer and thereby still allowing yourself some "wiggle room" if you so desire.

In my opinion, it's fine to tell them "yes, I'd love to work here." You can negotiate when you want to actually start later in the conversation, but accept the job first. Just say "Yes" first. Say "yes."

You can always call the employer back (do not email them) and tell them that you have changed your mind but you sincerely appreciated the offer and all. They shouldn't take your change of heart personally if you are just honest with them. You don't have to be glib, but you can say you talked it over with your wife/husband/partner/parakeet and decided otherwise...but again, say "yes" first.

This next part is going to be tricky scenario, so pay attention:

Let's say you just said "Yes" to the employer who just offered you a job (you should always say "Yes.") Once you've said "yes" and the interview is over and you're heading back to your car and you suddenly break out in the "second-guessing sweats" just relax.

Remember you might have said "Yes" to the job offer but the person you just said "yes" to doesn't have any idea that you are now second-guessing your decision. Relax. It's not like your starting work with them in the next 10 minutes. Allow yourself to feel overwhelmed with the job offer and then you'll be able to think more clearly.

This feeling is normal beyond words. Saying "yes" is quite scary and powerful all at once, but saying "No' after you initially said "yes" is quite prolific as well. Make sure if you decide to say "No" after you've originally said "yes" that you really mean it. You can never go back to "yes" again after you've said "No." Make sense?

Think shopping.
Okay, so you go shopping for that perfect "whatever" and you finally find it at the end of a long shopping day (okay, so stay with me here)and it might appear a little overpriced, yet you know it's the only one you've seen all day long. Are you the kind of person who snaps it up with a great big smile on your face knowing you can't possibly afford the item or are the type of person who thinks you can find it cheaper someplace else?
If you walk away from that "whatever item" then you have to "let it go" and not expect it to be there if and when you decide to go back for it if you can't find it cheaper some place else. Nine times out of ten it won't be there waiting on you when you return. And if it's not there then it wasn't meant for you to have it, right? I feel this way about jobs and interviewing.
I have never said "I wish I had" about any situation I walked away from as it relates to employment or creative self-fulfillment. You have to own and live in the moment with the decisions that you make at that particular time.

Just know what you want, be smart, and go get it. Oh, and then try to be happy with it when you have it. People are funny about that sometimes. I want it, I want it...uh, now what do I do with it?

10.Follow-up:
The biggest mistake I see after an interview for a job or internship is that a designer can turn into either a zombie or a stalker. Choose neither.
Instead you want to make sure that after your interview is over and you've had some time to process what took place, then my advice is to follow-up with a casual and creative "thank you" to the employer for taking time out of their busy day to speak and interview with you. Short and sweet but clever. You are a creative person so be creative with everything you do. It's a lifestyle.
Make sure you cover a few points quickly regarding your strengths and interests in their company. Reiterate that you would really enjoy working there and the interview made it even more apparent. Step up and show some courtesy to those who made time to see who you are as a designer and person. It's amazing what old-fashioned respect can
still do in this busy world. It has nothing to do with age.

Word to the wise here is that you don't want to pester the interviewer after your interview to see if you got the job or should you come back again or did they get your letter or email or box of cookies or the lottery ticket you bought them...you get my point. Allow the interviewer a few days to contact you, then I would suggest you give them a call. If that doesn't work, then shoot them an email mentioning that you had tried to call them. This is all good business practice and everyone understands this procedure. You're not trying to get a date, you're trying to secure a job or internship. Be thoughtful that the person you interviewed with just might have other things going on in their professional and personal life. They are not thinking about you as much as you are thinking about you. I wouldn't advise meeting them in the parking lot after work to ask why they never called you. Hello? Call the police!

Again, be patient. Learning when to be patient and when to be assertive is one of those categories of life that is unique to each of us. Listen to your soul.

Most of my Quick List for Interviewing is done with jest, but so much of it is eerily true. I really haven't embellished too much of the examples nor situations. Live long enough and you'll you'll have your own set of stories that appear stranger than fiction. However, it all comes from my own joyful and painful experiences in seeking employment, interviewing and even hiring employees to help fill the jobs that I eventually took. It's that "Circle of life" you hear about.

Enjoy the process because you'll have so many great stories to tell the next generation of great designers and artist. This is your story. You can choose to be the star of it or to be a backup singer. Jump in and participate and broaden the scope of your world. You are a part of a larger creative community so join in on the dance.

Each of you truly do have the capacity to create our own success as well as your own failure. Be optimistic. Many of you deserve more than you are asking of yourselves.

You don't understand. You updated your résumé, you're applying to jobs every day, you've cleaned up your digital dirt and you network every day. Yet here you still are on the unemployment list. What is wrong with employers?

Unfortunately, many job seekers don't stop to consider that the problem might not be employers but themselves.

It's a hard concept that most job seekers have trouble wrapping their heads around, but applicants frequently (and inadvertently) display signs that tell an employer that they're not the best fit for the job.

According to a 2009 CareerBuilder survey, 47 percent of employers said that finding qualified applicants is their biggest hiring challenge. When asked to identify the most valuable characteristics in new hires, employers cited multitasking, initiative and creative problem-solving.

Do you lack what employers want? Yes, there are fewer jobs and there is more competition, but are you doing everything you can? Here are 10 reasons why employers might have passed you by.

1. You lie
Any lies you tell in your job search, whether on your résumé or in an interview, will come back to haunt you. In a 2008 CareerBuilder survey, 49 percent of hiring managers reported they caught a candidate lying on his or her résumé; of those employers, 57 percent said they automatically dismissed the applicant. Everything you tell an employer can be discovered, so it behooves you to be honest from the get-go. If you're concerned about something in your past, invention is not the answer. Use your cover letter to tell your story, focusing on your strengths and accomplishments and explaining any areas of concern if needed.

2. You have a potty mouth
It's certainly tempting to tell anyone who will listen how big of a (insert expletive here) your current boss is, but a hiring manager for a new job is not that person. A 2009 CareerBuilder survey showed that 44 percent of employers said that talking negatively about current or previous employers was one of the most detrimental mistakes a candidate can make. Find a way to turn those negative things job into positives. If you can't get along with your co-workers, for example, tell the prospective employer that you're looking for a work environment where you feel like you're part of a team and your current position doesn't allow for that kind of atmosphere.

3. You don't show long-term potential
Employers want people in their organization to work their way up, so it's best to show that you want to and can grow with the company. If you were asked where you see yourself in five years and you gave an answer that wasn't related to the position or company you're interviewing with, kiss your chances goodbye. Ask questions like, "What type of career movement do you envision for the most successful candidate in this role?" It shows that you have envisioned your future at the company.

4. You have serious digital dirt
Social networking sites and online searches are the newest way that many employers are checking up on prospective hires. A 2009 CareerBuilder survey showed that 45 percent of employers use social networking sites to research candidates. Thirty-five percent of those employers found content that caused them to dismiss the candidate. Make sure to remove any photos, content or links that can work against you in an employer's eyes.

5. You don't know ... well, anything
In two separate 2009 CareerBuilder surveys, 58 percent of employers said that coming to the interview with no knowledge of the company was a turnoff, and 49 percent said that not asking good questions cost candidates a job offer. Plain and simple, do your homework before an interview. Explore the company online, prepare answers to questions and have someone give you a mock interview. The more prepared you are, the more employers will take you seriously.

6. You acted bored, cocky or disinterested
A little enthusiasm never hurt anyone, especially when it comes to a potential new job. Forty-five percent of employers in a 2009 CareerBuilder survey said that the biggest mistake candidates made in the interview was appearing disinterested and 42 percent said appearing arrogant cost applicants the job. Every business wants to put their most enthusiastic people forward with important clients and customers, so acting the opposite will get you nowhere.

7. You were a little too personal
Seventeen percent of employers said that candidates who provided too much personal information in the interview essentially blew their chances at the job, according to a 2009 CareerBuilder survey. Not only does personal information offend some people, but anytime you talk about topics such as your hobbies, race, age or religion, you're setting yourself up for bias. Though it's illegal for employers to discriminate against applicants because of any of these factors, some will do so, regardless.

8. You were all dollars, no sense
As a general rule of thumb, you should never bring up salary before the employer does. Doing so is tacky and makes the employer think that you care about the money involved, not about helping the employer succeed. If the topic does arise, however, be honest about your salary history. Employers can verify your salary in a matter of minutes these days, so lying only makes you look bad.

9. You didn't -- or can't -- give examples
Hiring managers want people who can prove that they will increase the organization's revenues, decrease its costs or help it succeed in some way. If all you give to an employer is a bunch of empty words about your accomplishments, you don't demonstrate how you can help the company. In fact, 35 percent of employers said that the most detrimental mistake candidates make is not providing specific examples in the interview. The more you can quantify your work, the better.

10. You don't have enough experience
Managers don't have as much time as they used to to train and mentor new employees. The more experience you have, the more likely you are to hit the ground running without a lot of hand-holding. The best way to show that you know what you're doing is to give the employer concrete examples of your experience in a given job duty.

This semester you are immensely fortunate to be working with jazz great musician Chuck Loeb and his daughter, Lizzy Loeb on designs for their upcoming individual music CD’s.

Each artist has very different music genres and approaches to their music.

There will be conversations with Chuck and Lizzy and it is your responsibility to get to know their music and their history so that you can comprehensively produce a contemporary and modern eco-friendly “sustainable” design for their packaged CD.

You should conceptualize the name of the album as well for Chuck Loeb. Title treatment and overall design along with eco-friendly materials is required.

Sustainability in design is important to each of them and your individual designs should demonstrate that attribute and commitment to our world.
Many musicians are leading the way in how their music is packaged and produced for public consumption.

More than just a jazz guitar player, Chuck Loeb is the consummate musician. In a career that spans four decades, he has proven himself to be a versatile composer, arranger and producer in a wide range of musical styles and contexts. In addition to crafting a fine discography of his own and producing albums for a number of other high-profile artists, his resume also includes music for commercial jingles and a variety of television programs and motion pictures. Whatever your personal tastes in music, media, entertainment or popular culture, chances are good that you’ve had at least a passing acquaintance with the work of Chuck Loeb.
Loeb grew up in Nyack, NY, a suburb of New York City and the perfect environment for a young person with an interest in music. The area was home to many artists who worked in the city, as well as a center for many arts, music and performance education programs. It was there, at the young age of 11, that Loeb decided to make music his life’s work. Self taught for several years, he began working with local bands in the area when he was 13, playing dances at the local youth center and eventually throughout the metropolitan area.
This early teenage period marked Loeb’s first exposure to jazz, and he decided that in order to reach the level of technical skill he’d been striving for, he would need to study music formally. Along with local teachers Richie Hart and Hy White, he traveled as far as Philadelphia to study with jazz guru Dennis Sandole, who eventually recommended that he study with the great jazz guitarist Jim Hall in New York City.
After studying with Hall for the last two years of high school, he enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Two years of intense study at Berklee greatly strengthened his musicianship – not only as a guitarist but as a composer and arranger as well – but the lure of professional work led to his departure from Berklee in 1976. That same year, he left the suburbs and moved to New York City.
Throughout his early years in the Big Apple, Loeb began making a name for himself as a sideman with jazz luminaries such as drummer Chico Hamilton, Latin percussionist and bandleader Ray Barreto, flutist Hubert Laws and various others. He also continued his musical studies with a vengeance, often practicing up to eight hours a day.
In 1979, jazz luminary Stan Getz invited Loeb to join his band. The gig proved to be a pivotal experience for him, both musically and personally. As a member of Getz’s group, and the composer of much of the band’s repertoire, he had the chance to tour the globe and perform at many of the world’s major festivals, jazz clubs and concert halls. Eventually, Loeb became the musical director of the group with his compositions comprising a large portion of the nightly repertoire. It was also during this time that he met and married Carmen Cuesta, a vocalist and songwriter from Madrid, Spain. In the years since, Loeb has produced a number of Carmen’s solo recordings, and the two have collaborated on various musical projects.
After leaving the Getz ensemble, Loeb resettled in New York and began to pursue a career as a studio musician. He logged thousands of studio hours recording, composing and producing albums, soundtracks, television show themes and jingles. It was here that he developed his talents as a producer, which would become a major focus of his career in later years.
In 1985, Loeb joined the group Steps Ahead with Michael Brecker, Michael Mainieri, Peter Erskine and Victor Bailey. Returning to the festivals and stages of the jazz world rekindled his desire to focus on his own music. In 1988, after nearly ten years of intense studio work, he made the decision to develop his own recording career. His first offering as a solo artist was My Shining Hour, released on Jazz City, a Japanese label. A year later, he released Magic Fingers on DMP, an audiophile label that was one of the first in the world to release recordings on compact disc.
After four more releases on DMP, Loeb left to sign with the jazz and world music label Shanachie, where he released The Music Inside in 1996 (the album’s title song held the number 1 position on the contemporary jazz charts for six weeks).
Concurrent with his solo career, Loeb also recorded with Metro, a four-piece contemporary jazz combo that included keyboardist Mitch Forman, drummer Wolfgang Haffner and a succession of bassists: Anthony Jackson, Victor Bailey and Mel Brown. Metro cut four albums on the Lipstick and Hip Bop labels between 1994 and 2002. In addition, Loeb played with the Fantasy Band with bassist John Lee, drummer Lionel Cordew and several session players. The Fantasy Band recorded three albums on DMP and Shanachie between 1993 and 1997.
After nine years and seven solo albums, Loeb left Shanachie and joined Heads Up in late 2006. Presence, his Heads Up debut, is scheduled for worldwide release on January 24, 2007. The new album celebrates the importance of the human element in the creative process. “Nowadays, there’s a lot of music that gets created in a laboratory,” says Loeb. “We all have computers, and we do things long distance. But it never ceases to amaze me how, as soon as you put the live musicians into the equation, it’s their presence that brings the thing to life. That’s the idea behind the album title – the effect that an individual’s personality has on the music, both in the context of a recording and in a live setting.”
I am VERY proud to announce that a few weeks ago I received a call from some of my favorite musicians in the world: Bob James, Harvey Mason, and Nathan East who invited me to join the band Fourplay. As they were telling me on the conference call that I could take my time to think it over, I interrupted them to say "YES"!
Of course I want to mention that I will be taking over the guitar chair from one of my all-time favorite players, the great Larry Carlton, who has decided to focus more on his own projects for now. And as if those shoes alone weren't big enough to fill, he was of course preceded in the band by another of my favorite guitarists - Lee Ritenour.... whew! Wish me luck.
My first show with the band is scheduled for April 18th at The Seabreeze Jazz Festival in Destin Florida. After that we will head in to the studio to start work on the new CD!!!!

Lizzy Loeb’s new CD “Drawing Lines” is a knockout debut release. It’s rare that a songwriter of her youthful age comes along with such maturity and raw musical talent. Add to that Loeb’s tasteful guitar playing, and sincere and easily identifiable voice, and it becomes clear that Loeb is the real deal. From the opening track we hear voice and acoustic guitar take center stage. The addition of acoustic piano and Latin-tinged rhythms and chord changes seamlessly fuse Loeb’s jazzy but unmistakably pop sound. The sensitivity and breathiness of the vocal and melodic motifs invite comparison with songwriters John Mayer or Norah Jones but Loeb has developed her own originality as well. The word play in songs like “Living At All” provides thoughtful images: “It’s lonely here/the bookshelves are my company;” or “It’s hot out here/the sweat is sticking to my shirt/I’m getting reacquainted with the dirt.” The hook in “Living At All,” like many of her tunes, is infectious—the kind of tune you find yourself humming around the house—and when you recognize the tune immediately rush back to the CD to take another listen. The chromatic writing in the bridge section reveals a level of musical sophistication, heard throughout the CD, that grows on you. Of course having the musical pedigree helps. Loeb’s mother is the phenomenal vocal talent Carmen Cuesta, and her father, the guitarist Chuck Loeb, has been in the forefront of the jazz field for more than two decades. Chuck Loeb’s contributions to the production and guitar work only add to the overall success of the CD, which is full of musical gems. Songs like “The One” and “James,” really shine. The horn work and arrangement of David Mann on “James” particularly stands out and the bass playing of veteran Will Lee, among others, helps provide polished and solid rhythm tracks. “Later Or Sooner,” is one of the catchiest tracks on the CD. The opening groove recalls some of the best pop writing of Joe Jackson and Loeb continues to pen some clever lyrics: “I’m walking behind you/tripped over your shadow once or twice;” and the hook… “Sooner or later you’re gonna have to rescue me/Later or sooner you’re gonna see the worst of me/rather than sooner let’s make it later, shall we?” Other standouts are “A Matter of Pride,” “Victims of Sympathy,” “No Surprises Left,” the intimate “Who Are You,” which highlights just voice and guitar, and the title track “Drawing Lines,” with its soulful and yearning cello accompaniment. In fact, there really isn’t a weak track on the entire CD—quite an accomplishment! If this debut CD is any indication of what we can continue to expect from Lizzy Loeb, I’m looking forward to watching her blossom. Highly recommended!

A wonderful night celebrating so much of your work from the Fall Semester.
Your work is certainly a big part of the exhibition. Brenda Galina complimented your work at the opening along with the work from Ga Tech and Portfolio Center. Nathan was singled out for his poster design, which seemed to be everywhere you looked. Certainly a Love Fest for his Love Nest Logo and Poster design. I hope those of you who couldn't go to the opening that you'll take the time and go see the show and your work. You owe that to yourself and your fellow designers in class. Take time to celebrate your accomplishments.

How many designers still in school get to have their work in a Museum of Design?You can now say with confidence that your work is currently being exhibited in a museum of design. How cool is that? GSU is going to do a story on the event as well.

Thanks to Joe Buckel for insisting t that we have the posters printed to a larger format (18x24.) Also to Joe, Mike Rogers, Michelle Villasenor, Nathan Linkous and Phillip Webb for assisting in all the spray mounting, foam core preparation and printing. We got all the posters printed for free so it was kismet we indeed went larger for the design impact at the exhibition.

hese photographs of albatross chicks were made in September, 2009, on Midway Atoll, a tiny stretch of sand and coral near the middle of the North Pacific. The nesting babies are fed bellies-full of plastic by their parents, who soar out over the vast polluted ocean collecting what looks to them like food to bring back to their young. On this diet of human trash, every year tens of thousands of albatross chicks die on Midway from starvation, toxicity, and choking.

To document this phenomenon as faithfully as possible, not a single piece of plastic in any of these photographs was moved, placed, manipulated, arranged, or altered in any way. These images depict the actual stomach contents of baby birds in one of the world's most remote marine sanctuaries, more than 2000 miles from the nearest continent.

It’s Nice That points us a to an impressive video by Artist Rob Carter. The film, titled Metropolis, shows the evolution of the city of Charlotte, North Carolina using paper-based stop motion animation.

Carter explains:

Metropolis is a quirky and very abridged narrative history of the city of Charlotte, North Carolina. It uses stop motion video animation to physically manipulate aerial still images of the city (both real and fictional), creating a landscape in constant motion. Starting around 1755 on a Native American trading path, the viewer is presented with the building of the first house in Charlotte. From there we see the town develop through the historic dismissal of the English, to the prosperity made by the discovery of gold and the subsequent roots of the building of the multitude of churches that the city is famous for. Now the landscape turns white with cotton, and the modern city is ‘born’, with a more detailed re-creation of the economic boom and surprising architectural transformation that has occurred in the past 20 years

Charlotte is one of the fastest growing cities in the country, primarily due to the continuing influx of the banking community, resulting in an unusually fast architectural and population expansion that shows no sign of faltering despite the current economic climate. However, this new downtown Metropolis is therefore subject to the whim of the market and the interest of the giant corporations that choose to do business there. Made entirely from images printed on paper, the animation literally represents this sped up urban planners dream, but suggests the frailty of that dream, however concrete it may feel on the ground today. Ultimately the video continues the city development into an imagined hubristic future, of more and more skyscrapers and sports arenas and into a bleak environmental future. It is an extreme representation of the already serious water shortages that face many expanding American cities today; but this is less a warning, as much as a statement of our paper thin significance no matter how many monuments of steel, glass and concrete we build.

Metropolis is currently being screened at the Museum of Art and Design in New York till April 4th.

Ringling Design Summit

File this under "What I did this Weekend while you were having fun."
Yours truly ventured back down to Sarasota (home of the best grouper sandwiches in the world) to the Ringling 2010 Design Summit. I'm now calling it the 2010 Design Submit Conference.

I have to be honest about this...the business of design bores me beyond belief. However,the business of creativity is uplifting, inspiring, and optimistic.

This conference was geared more towards the business side although it did have moments of great insight like the seminar with David Bromstead. He was young, funny, bright and talented...and he knew how to engage an audience with storytelling. He didn't seem so caught up in his own persona and success. This made him engaging to hear.

Okay, so next up was The Grand Pooh Bah Stephen Heller.
Talented but one of the most boring, self serving individuals I've every heard speak.
He should seriously stick to writing and not speaking. I even like him a little less now as a writer because I suffered through his talk. I was proud of myself because I sat quietly and listened intently in hopes that some small design crumb of information from all the years of his expertise would land in my lap and it would make me a better designer and teacher. It didn't.

Heller is the co-chair of the MFA Designer as Author program and co-founder of the MFA in Design Criticism and MFA in Interaction Design programs at the School of Visual Arts, New York. For 33 years he was an art director at the New York Times. He currently writes the Visuals column for the Book Review. He is editor of AIGA VOICE: Online Journal of Design and contributing editor to Print, EYE, Baseline, and ID magazines. He contributes to Design Observer and writes the DAILY HELLER blog for Print Magazine (http://blog.printmag.com/dailyheller/). He is the author of over 120 books on design and popular culture, including "Design Literacy", "Paul Rand", "Graphic Style", "Stylepedia", "The Design Entrepreneur", "Design School Confidential", "Iron Fists: Branding the Twentieth Century Totalitarian State", and, most recently, "New Ornamental Type". Lastly worth mentioning was Susan Szenasy, Editor in Chief of Metropolis Magazine.
She was worth the trip and the grouper sandwich.
During her 17 years as Editor-in-Chief, the magazine has gained international recognition and has won numerous awards. Susan began her career with Interiors magazine, rising from a junior position of editorial assistant to senior editor; then she was named chief editor of Residential Interiors, the short-lived offspring of Interiors. Susan is the author of several books on design and teaches design history and ethics.

Lesson learned for me is the same it has been for years in going to these events. Everyone has a story. Some of the stories inspire and others bore. That is why these conferences and seminars have 10-12 speakers. Something for everyone. Sort of a salad bar pick and choose as you wish effect.

What I took away from this conference about design is that the folks who are in the business of design haven't a clue what students want to learn because most of them are not in the classrooms and not listening to the heartbeat of the students who desire to be successful. I love the designers who speak about their work firsthand with their audience in mind of their ever-changing discipline.

P.S. No one liked the name of the iPad. Funny that's what everyone was talking about, except me who kept wanting another grouper sandwich.

Art school to receive $4 million from namesake

ATLANTA - Faculty members in Georgia State University's Ernest G. Welch School of Art and Design are currently researching how to strategically enhance programs and scholarship through a generous gift from the school's namesake.

Ernest G. Welch, the university's oldest alumnus, died at 103 on Dec. 26, 2009. He and his late sister, Frances, left a significant portion of their estates to Georgia State's School of Art and Design, totaling approximately $4 million.

The gift will be invested through the university's endowment, providing annual support to the school, which was named for Welch in 2003.

"It's huge," said Ralph Gilbert, associate dean for fine arts at Georgia State. "This money could support programs, bring in visiting artists and scholars, enhance infrastructure, boost scholarship and develop international programs.

Gilbert said he asked art faculty to start researching the other top art programs in the country to see how the resources can be used to fund new initiatives and build upon the school's existing distinctiveness. Welch also left his camera collection to the school, Gilbert said.

Welch was a 1999 graduate of the School of Art and Design. A long-time resident of Atlanta, Welch earned a business degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1928. He went on to serve in counterintelligence during World War II and landed in Normandy at Omaha Beach 10 days after the invasion. He was stationed in France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany, where he took photographs of the war effort.

After a decades-long career as a manager for Sonoco Products Company, Welch enrolled in Georgia State's art school in his late 80s. He earned a bachelor of fine arts in photography from the university in 1999.

In the fall semester of 2002, Welch enrolled in introductory painting and drawing classes in order to continuously improve his photography skills. He continued his self-education when he took up digital photography at 102. Welch's work has appeared at the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center and Arts for All Gallery in Atlanta as well as the gallery at Georgia State.

During his life, Welch had also been a generous supporter of the GSU art school, giving money for scholarships and enhancements to the photography program.

"Ernest was an incredibly kind and generous man," said Nancy Peterman, vice president for development at Georgia State. "We are truly grateful for his bequest, which will benefit future generations of art students here for many years to come."

MODA: Love Nest Opening Friday February 26th

Got to see the Love Nest Poster design (created by Nathan) in all it's printed glory and the one stretched canvas that will occupy a spot on their exhibition wall. Looks great. Remember the large wall 25 foot wall inside the atrium..that too will be occupied by the poster design as well. Cool huh?
I can show you the photography of the people in this exhibition.

Everyone is invited to the opening on that Friday night.
Wine, Sparkling water, Martinis and food at the opening.
You can bring friends, family whomever. There is a $10 donation (voluntary) for that night.

The plans for the museum cards is on hold because they have plans of moving across the street from the High Museum and want to wait until they have an actual museum store.

She plans to introduce you all during the opening festivities. She is still planning to show a poster design by everyone
during the opening. One design per student on an easel along with information on yourself.

Also, Mario's MODA Summer Camp design is being shown that night as well. She showed me the Advertisements with his work
being distributed throughout Sandy Springs, Brookhaven, Buckhead in the Reporter Newspapers. Also inside the Alliance Arts magazines during this past fall and current spring season of performances.

She is interested in you doing work for several more shows if you are so willing.
One is an exhibition on Motorcycles which could be terrific.

Nathan was just notified that he is a finalist in the Best of College Photography Competition. He entered one of his beautiful
photos from Africa taken last summer while a volunteer in Kenya. Should know in a few days if he is one of the winners.
There were close to 14,000 entries so his finalist spot makes it a tremendous honor as well. Congrats Nathan.

A must read for all designers who are even thinking of moving into Advertising. However, it's a great read for any creative who
loves the "backstory" about being a designer. Lots of great funny horrendous stories of working in the design field.

You won't be able to put this book down. Give it a shot.

Michael Bierut studied graphic design at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning, graduating summa cum laude in 1980. Prior to joining Pentagram in 1990 as a partner in the firm’s New York office, he worked for ten years at Vignelli Associates, ultimately as vice president of graphic design.

Bierut’s clients at Pentagram have included the Alliance for Downtown New York, Benetton, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, Alfred A. Knopf, the Walt Disney Company, Mohawk Paper Mills, Motorola, MillerCoors, the Toy Industry Association, Princeton University, Yale School of Architecture, New York University, the Fashion Institute of Technology, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Library of Congress, the Museum of Sex, and the New York Jets. His projects have ranged from the design of “I Want to Take You Higher,” an exhibition on the psychedelic era for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, to serving as design consultant to United Airlines.

Bierut’s recent activities have included the development of a new identity and signage for the expanded Morgan Library and Museum; the development of environmental graphics for The New York Times Building; the design of an identity and public promotion for Philip Johnson’s Glass House; the creation of marketing strategies for the William Jefferson Clinton Foundation; the development of a new brand strategy and packaging for luxury retailer Saks Fifth Avenue; and the redesign of the magazine The Atlantic.

He has won hundreds of design awards and his work is represented in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, all in New York; the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.; the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg, Germany; and the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Montreal. He has served as president of the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) from 1988 to 1990 and is president emeritus of AIGA National. He currently serves as a director of the Architectural League of New York and of New Yorkers for Parks. In 1989, Bierut was elected to the Alliance Graphique Internationale, in 2003 he was named to the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame, and in 2006 he received the profession’s highest honor, the AIGA Medal, in recognition of his distinguished achievements and contributions to the field. In 2008 he received the Design Mind Award in the National Design Awards presented by the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution.

Bierut is a Senior Critic in Graphic Design at the Yale School of Art. He is co-editor of the anthology series Looking Closer: Critical Writings on Graphic Design, published by Allworth Press, and in 1998 he co-edited and designed the monograph Tibor Kalman: Perverse Optimist. He is a co-founder of the weblog Design Observer and his commentaries about graphic design in everyday life can be heard nationally on the Public Radio International program “Studio 360.” His book Seventy-nine Short Essays on Design was published by Princeton Architectural Press in 2007.
